The Blackpool youth team secured all three points in a thrilling 7-3 victory against Morecambe yesterday.
James Doyle scored two goals, with Kit Gregory, Rowan Roache, Denzel Williams, Elliot Pond and Tyler Rufus also getting on the scoresheet for Ciaran Donnelly’s side.
The scoring was opened in the seventh minute by Gregory, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner from a ball across the box by Roache.
Despite Myles Boney getting a touch to the ball, Lewis Tomlinson’s shot from long range trickled into the back of the net to level the score.
Doyle then put The Seasiders back in front a few minutes later with a low driven shot from outside the box.
Just a couple of minutes into the second-half, there was a manic few minutes which saw four goals scored in that time.
The first goal was by Rowan Roache, who hit a cross from out wide that bent into the bottom corner of Povey’s net and left the Morecambe goalkeeper confused.
Doyle added a quick second goal for Blackpool when he headed home from a cross by Caleb Richards to complete his brace.
Jack Taylor then pulled a goal back for The Shrimps, before Denzel Williams scored a fantastic header from a corner by Rowan Roache to put Blackpool up 5-2.
In the 68th minute Pond showed his class as he scored with a fabulous turn and volley on the edge of the box to extend the youth team’s lead.
Morecambe didn’t give up and scored a third consolation goal through Jake Townsend.
Tyler Rufus came off the bench to score the final goal of the game with a header that went through the goalkeeper’s legs.
The Shrimps were visibly frustrated as the game went on and had a player sent off for using expletives towards an official.
Ciaran Donnelly said: “In the second-half the clinical play around the box improved massively.
“There’s nothing to stop us and having a challenge for the title this year!”
