Gabby George celebrated captaining the England Under-19s for the first time by scoring the winner against Austria today.
The Everton defender scored the only goal in the opening Euro Elite Qualifying Round match just past the half-hour mark after being on the receiving end of a cross from a free-kick.
George said: “It’s obviously an honour to captain my country in the Euro qualifiers. It’s every girl’s dream to captain their country at this level and to score tops it off.
“I’m quite an outgoing person so I just speak to everyone here and if anyone needs advice or any my help, I am more than happy to give it to them.
“I’ve been away a lot with them over the past few years. It’s good getting to train every day with some of the best players in the country at our age.
The win is the perfect start for the Lionesses as they look to qualify for the European finals as well as being a boost for George ahead of the upcoming WSL2 match against Watford.
“I wanted the three points to start off the group stages so we can build on it to hopefully qualify for the finals so I wasn’t really fussed on who scored or how they scored as long as the ball was in the back of the net and we took all three points.
“I can’t wait to continue the league with Everton and hopefully start picking up some more points.”
Megan Finnigan also featured in the side that faced Austria and will be hoping to retain her place for the upcoming matches against Sweden and Belgium in their group.
