Ciaran Donnelly was delighted with the youth team after they secured a 3-0 win against Tranmere Rovers.
The Seasiders had to battle throughout the game but goals from Will Dunne, Ralph Chea and Rowan Roache secured all three points.
Speaking post-match, here’s what the academy manager had to say…
The challenges of the game.
It was a proper League Two, Conference style of game. It was a tough pitch against a team that wanted to mix it and we’ve come out from it having passed the test.
The team’s mentality.
I’m delighted with the lads because on previous occasions we’ve struggled when it can be physical and aggressive, but they stood up to it really well. There was a real good team spirit.
The way the lads managed the game was probably the most pleasing thing of the day. We’ve come in at half-time with a two-goal lead in two previous games recently and not looked as comfortable as we did in this game. As a coach, it’s pleasing to see that the lads are learning how to manage a game.
Keeping a clean sheet.
They showed a real good determination as a group to keep the ball out of our net and even at 3-0 up in the 90th minute the lads were still throwing their bodies in front of things, and I’m pleased that they’ve taken that attitude. The clean sheet was a massive plus point for us.
Will Avon’s performance.
Will Avon from the Under-16s at centre half was outstanding. He’s a real, old school defender. It’s pleasing to see as a coach because there’s not many around anymore but he’ll put his head in dangerous areas, tackle and is like a rash over strikers.
